The DVSA has recently announced changes to the driving test and how bookings can be managed. This follows their most recent changes to the practical driving test itself, more details of which can be found in our recent blog post, 'Exciting Changes to the Driving Test: What You Need to Know!'
What are the changes to the driving test booking system?
From March 31, 2026, driving test bookings can only be changed twice, dropping considerably from the previous 6 occasions a test booking can be changed.
Any test swap will also count toward one of the two permitted changes to any booking.
What classes as a 'change' to my driving test?
Changing the date or time, the test centre at which your test will take place, or swapping your test with another learner will also count as one 'change'.
If you wish to make any further changes after any two amendments, you will need to cancel your test and book a new one.
What does this mean for me?
In practical terms, it won't affect you too much. However, to ensure the change doesn't adversely affect you, it's important to ensure your test date aligns with when you are ready to pass the practical driving test.
If you're wondering how long this may take, it may be worth your taking a read of our blog post on this very subject here.
What if I already have my test booked?
Provided you feel your current test date is suitable to allow you time to reach the desired standards and you can attend, you do not need to do anything.
However, if you or your instructor feel you need more time, or you're unable to attend your current test, it's important that you change it as soon as possible. You can read more about whether you are ready to pass your driving test in one of our blog posts here.
This will allow other candidates to take on your current test slot and allow you to choose a more appropriate booking.
Provided you have given at least 10 working days' notice from when your test is booked, you will receive a full refund.
There are more changes to come from the DVSA in respect of the driving test, and we will keep you up-to-date with the latest news.
