Are you wondering how long it takes to pass the driving test? You're not alone. It is undoubtedly one of the most common questions we get asked, and often a rather tricky one to answer.
First, let's assume you're wondering how long it takes to pass the driving test, including the theory test as well.
The average wait time for a theory test is generally only a few weeks, and this is no different at our local test centre in Lowestoft, about 11 miles from Great Yarmouth, where we are primarily based.
How long it takes to be ready to pass the theory test is very much down to the individual.
We all learn in different ways, and revision for the theory test is primarily based around reading, but there are other helpful methods, too.
You can learn more about the theory test and how to prepare for it by reading our dedicated post on this topic here.
Once you have passed your theory test, you are then eligible to book your practical driving test. The average wait time across the U.K. is about 5-6 months. This ongoing issue regarding wait times has been well-published and scrutinised, and sadly doesn't show any signs of changing soon.
It is usually at this stage that people research how to find earlier test dates via cancellation apps and random people on social media, which can be a very expensive and dangerous practice, as many of these people advertising driving tests and criminals who will take your money (often charging extortionate amounts), and will never provide a test date. Some may even sell your personal information on to criminal gangs.
The only official booking system is that of the DVSA, where the cost of the practical driving test is £62.
Here at Day Tripper Driving Tuition, we want you to pass your driving test as soon as possible, so we endeavour to give you the best tuition possible to suit your learning style.
One way in which we try to assist is by swapping your tests with fellow pupils to ensure everyone goes to test at the right time for them.
With four driving instructors (at the time of writing), this gives us four diaries at our disposal, where we can switch pupils' tests around, when appropriate, to help reduce wait times.
Now, back to the troublesome question of how long it will take to pass the driving test.
The average time, as reported by the DVSA, is 45 hours of professional tuition and 20 hours of private practice, equalling 65 hours in total.
Note the word 'average' here: some people may take less, some more. Whichever way it works out for you is not a reflection of your skills or of you as a person, as we are all very different. We learn at different rates, in different ways. Therefore, it's tricky for us to tell you exactly how long it will take, but we endeavour to progress your abilities at a rate that is suitable for you. It's important that we give you opportunities to develop your skills, whilst balancing this with not pushing you beyond what you're capable of, as this can damage your confidence, and learning is made much more difficult when we are stressed or overwhelmed.
This process can be boosted in several ways. Here are some of our tips to help:
Book additional lessons, which we have available to our pupils via the Total Drive app, which is used for progress records, bookings and payments.
Revise using the resources we recommend here. This includes after you pass the theory test - there's always more to learn.
Make the most of private practice. We have additional guidance here.
Although sometimes unavoidable, try your best not to cancel lessons. Breaks in lessons can affect consistency and affect your progress.
Make the most of your instructor: ask questions, gain knowledge from them, and let us know when you feel you need more work in a particular area of your driving.
Throughout your driving lessons with us, we will guide you through the process, assessing your development all the time, and using mock tests, which allow us to truly delve into your readiness for the practical driving test.
Whether you pass your driving test first time, or need a few tries, every learner's journey is unique. Stay focused, stay safe, and trust the process. Everyone passes when they're ready.
