Who Can Apply for a Driving Licence

There are certain criteria you must meet in order to apply for a driving licence:

• You are at least 15 years and 9 months of age

• You meet the minimum medical standards

• You meet the minimum eyesight standards

• You have been given permission to live in Great Britain for at least 185 days

How to Apply for a Driving Licence

Once you have confirmed you meet the criteria outlined above, you have two options how to apply: online or by post.

Applying online is certainly the fastest way, as well as the cheapest. Applying online costs £34, whilst the postal option costs £43.

Most post offices will accommodate driving licence applications, and you will need to get the 'D1' form, but for the benefit of this blog, let's stick to online applications, as that's how the vast majority of people apply.

Before starting your application, you will need to create a 'driver and vehicle' account, which enables you to verify your identity. This can be completed HERE.

Once your account is created, ensure you have a photo ID if possible (a passport, for example) and details of your current home address. If you have recently or frequently moved address, you may be required to provide those details, too. Also have your national insurance number to hand.

How to Prevent Rejections or Delays with Your Application

There are several common reasons applications are rejected or delayed - normally by errors made by the applicant.

• When applying for your driving licence, take your time. Ensure that the information you provide is accurate and complete. Even a misspelled name or address can cause a rejected or delayed application.

• Read the photo guidance carefully and be sure to meet the requirements which are detailed.

• Pay the fee by the means requested and make sure you pay the full and exact amount.

• If you have medical conditions, ensure you disclose them. The DVLA may need to conduct further enquires into your personal circumstances, and not disclosing them accurately or at all can create legal ramifications.

• All identity documents must match the application details; be concise in the information you provide.

Things to Consider and Final Thoughts

It's wonderful that you're taking the leap and applying for your driving licence, but there are a few things to remember:

• You cannot legally drive on public roads until your provisional driving licence is issued to you, and even then there are many legal requirements.

• During busier periods, there may be delays in receiving your driving licence, but be patient - the turnaround for online applications is normally quick.
