Meet the Instructor - Adrian

Adrian is the founder of Day Tripper Driving Tuition and has approximately 9 years of experience in the industry.

Starting his initial training way back in 2009, Adrian was inspired to become a driving instructor following a chat with another local instructor who is still working within the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft area.

Trained in Norwich but basing himself in his hometown of Great Yarmouth, Adrian began working as a Potential Driving Instructor ('PDI') as soon as he passed his theory and driving ability tests.

His diary soon filled with pupils he sourced from his workplace, as well as school friends and acquaintances, and a few months later he passed his teaching ability test on his first attempt, of which he was very proud.

Several months later, Adrian was subject to a 'Check Test', which is a compulsory test conducted by the DVSA to ensure that driving instructors are maintaining a high standard of teaching ability.

At the conclusion of the test, Adrian was over the moon at being graded what was then referred to as a '6', meaning he received the highest achievable grade.

Working independently and successfully under the highly unoriginal company name of 'Young's Driving Tuition', Adrian, after almost 5 years as an instructor, felt the pitfalls of being a sole trader in a one-person business and missed having colleagues around him.

Consequently, he followed an entirely different career path for the following 8 years.

In 2018, Adrian had his first daughter, Amelie, and it didn't take long for him to miss the joys of beings self-employed, which allows for a much more life-friendly work pattern and therefore much more time to spend with his daughter.

So, in 2022 Adrian contacted Steve G. Smith, who worked within the area as a driving instructor trainer.

Steve spent time with Adrian, updating him on the array of changes that had taken place within the industry since he had last left.

A little over a year later, Adrian was back in the instructor's seat, taking on students and working hard to develop himself back into a confident, professional, and knowledgeable driving instructor.

Once qualified, Adrian's fiancée, Toni, enjoyed hearing about Adrian's work as an instructor and observed some lessons from the back seat. It didn't take long for Day Tripper Driving Tuition to become a family-run business, and Toni also sought training from Steve.

With this not being Adrian's first dive into being a driving instructor, he soon had visions of helping to develop other trainee driving instructors and to build a brand that he wished he had developed last time round.

In 2025, Adrian took on franchisees as he wished to build a wonderful team of instructors around him who could support one another in every aspect of the role, as well as ensuring that the loneliness and isolation of self-employment was kept at bay.

Adrian loves meeting and getting to know new pupils, and enjoys the social element of the role. He brings an element of humor to lessons, which he believes helps pupils, especially those who may be nervous, to relax into their lessons and enjoy their learning experience.

Now, with 3 daughters, Adrian is fully complacent in his career as a driving instructor in Great Yarmouth, and thrives to build a brand the public can trust within the community.

Away from work, Adrian is a singer and songwriter who has recorded an album with his band, The Craft.

He is also an author who has published two books to date, with several other projects currently being worked on.

Adrian also loves to travel and has a vast collection of shot glasses - one collected for every destination around the world he has travelled to.
